How Belize SSB contributions are calculated
For the general employed-person schedule, SSB uses weekly earnings bands. Each band has a fixed weekly insurable earning and fixed employee and employer contribution amounts.
That means the payroll deduction is not simply the same employee percentage for every salary. The employee and employer shares vary by wage band, while the combined general contribution equals 10% of the applicable weekly insurable earnings.
The top wage band
For weekly earnings of BZD $500 and over, the current schedule uses BZD $520 as weekly insurable earnings. The employee contribution is BZD $23.40 and the employer contribution is BZD $28.60, for a combined BZD $52.00.
When SSB contributions are due
The Social Security Board states that employers are responsible for paying the total contribution due, including the employee share deducted from earnings. The monthly contribution payment and Contribution Statement are due by the 14th day of the following month.
Special age and retirement cases
The general wage-band calculator is intended for ordinary insurable employment. SSB publishes separate treatment for some workers aged 60 to 64 who are receiving retirement benefit and for persons aged 65 and over, including an employer-only employment-injury contribution.
Payroll recordkeeping matters
- Keep each employee’s Social Security number and employment dates.
