Key points

  • Start with accurate gross earnings for the pay period.
  • PAYE is based on the current annual income-tax rules.
  • SSB uses weekly wage bands and fixed contribution amounts.
  • Net pay should be supported by a clear payslip and auditable payroll record.

Step 1: establish gross earnings

Start with the employee’s regular earnings and add any applicable overtime, holiday pay, allowances, bonuses, or other payroll items. The treatment of individual items can differ for tax and Social Security purposes, so payroll configuration should match current official guidance.

Step 2: estimate PAYE

Annual employment income is the key starting point for the current Belize employee income-tax rules. Income at or below BZD $29,000 is currently not chargeable. Above that level, the BZD $20,000 basic deduction and 25% tax rate apply, with a tapering credit between BZD $29,000 and BZD $32,000.

Step 3: apply the correct SSB wage band

SSB uses weekly wage bands. Match the employee’s weekly earnings to the current official schedule and use the fixed employee and employer contribution amounts for that band. Do not assume a flat employee percentage across all salaries.

Step 4: calculate net pay and employer cost

  • Gross earnings
  • Less employee SSB contribution
  • Less PAYE withholding and any other lawful employee deductions
  • Equals employee net pay
  • Separately record employer SSB and any other employer payroll costs

Step 5: produce the payslip and retain the audit trail

A useful payslip should make gross earnings, statutory deductions, other deductions, and net pay easy to understand. Payroll records should support the amounts reported to SSB and Belize Tax Service.
